blog yard sale!

A few other bloggers have started doing this, and I think it's a great idea. Yesterday I was going through my closet and realized I have tons of stuff that I never wear--and I think I'm finally ready to part with. All of the stuff listed below has only been worn once or twice (yes, I'm aware that I have a problem) so it's all in excellent condition! Each piece is $10 (or b/o). If you're interested in any of the pieces, please e-mail me at jewelrywithoutjewels@gmail.com. Happy Shopping!

so long sweet summer

Here we are...just a few days left of summer vacation. I'm sad to see it go. The start of summer always brings this feeling of endless possibilities: 2+ months of absolute freedom, lazy hazy days at the beach, long nights with good friends...
Well this summer was a little bit different from what J and I had imagined, and in the wise words of Big Brother (aka our favorite summertime reality tv show) , we should have "expect[ed] the unexpected." We had so many things that were on the "to do" list, that just didn't get done. Life threw us some curves that we just weren't prepared for.
When I look back at the summer of 2009, I know that I'll have forgotten all about those little things that didn't get done. Instead, I'll remember it as the first summer that J and I lived together, the summer we got Bodhi, and the summer when everything (eventually) fell into place.
Bring on the fall.

Maybe so, maybe not

Erica and I have totally different ideas of what Phish sounds like, or should sound like. I listened to them a lot during high school, which was in the early 90s--Junta, Lawn Boy, A Picture of Nectar, and Rift are still the albums I hear playing in my head when my students show up in Phish t-shirts. For Erica, though, it's different--she's so much younger than me that she didn't start listening to Phish until after I pretty much stopped, when I went away to college and got into punk and indie and disowned my jam-band fan past.
So this show's setlist turned out to be a lot more of my stuff than hers--lots of old songs that even predated my time of phandom, a lot of inside jokes and references for old-school heads, not too many of their poppier songs (no "Waste," no "Farmhouse," no "Sample in a Jar"), a killer cover of the Talking Heads' "Psycho Killer".
The upshot of the whole thing, though, is that I'm interested in Phish again. They have a new record coming out in a couple of weeks that I will probably buy. I've been looking all summer for a new band to love (and am about to head out to the library to pick up the Kings of Leo discs they're holding for me), but maybe it's just time to rediscover a band I used to call one of my favorites, back in a much different time.

Sick in the summer

The entire right side of my head is congested. It's been tolerable for the past couple of days, but I woke up this morning absolutely miserable, and have spent the day getting worse. All the stress of finalizing wedding plans, finding Erica a car that actually stops when she wants it to, and keeping our dog on the D/L hasn't helped, either. So I've had one of those days.

The hell of it is that if it wasn't the middle of August, I'd just soldier through this thing and go to work. But since I can sit around and think about it, I am, and that's making it worse. I'm about to get into self-pity mode, which I hope I can avoid, but I definitely feel it coming on.

A few things are helping me keep everything in perspective, not least the article I read in the Greenwich Time this morning about the former student of mine who died in a car accident in Vermont. I don't want to go into a whole "at least I have my health and my loved ones" thing here, but yeah, that's what I'm thinking about.

Meanwhile, we're actually making a lot of progress in terms of wedding plans. After a lot of back and forth with the catering manager at the venue, who first told us one price, then backtracked, then seemed to misunderstand a lot of what Erica and I were trying to explain, we're about to sign the contract to have the wedding we want. We should have the paperwork done by the end of the week, with the deposit mailed in and everything. It's taken a while, but it's happening.

Speaking of weddings, there's a non-zero possibility that we'll finally have the ring finished this weekend too. More on that later.

The next thing to get done--figure out how to get the band heard by more than just our friends and families. We played a couple of strong sets this past weekend, but, as Erica pointed out, the bar was pretty much empty except for people we knew and a few regulars. I've got a few books on band promotion on hold at the library, but I feel like it's going to take more than just books to get this thing going. Anyone have any ideas how to make it happen?

Dog days

It's the hottest day of the summer so far--so hot that the radio station we can always agree on was playing nothing but acoustic music all day, presumably in an effort to get everyone to relax. It's always tough to be mellow when it's so hot out, and we've got a few things we're working on right now. Between major complications with Erica's car and a couple of minor SNAFUs with the wedding venue we want, we've had to find ways of just kind of chilling out and metaphysically counting to ten.

The best solution we've found so far is the one we hit on in the middle of yesterday's awful humidity and impending thunderstorm (which never came)--hanging out on the floor with Bodhi and each other and watching Weeds, which we just got from Netflix and can't get enough of. As much as it's helpful sometimes to work off frustration by going for a long walk or hitting the gym or playing some music, sometimes it's even more awesome to just veg out all day, watch a lot of TV, and gorge on baby carrots and hummus.

Speaking of music, if you're looking to kill a little time, there are some new Terryl Lee Band videos up on YouTube from our show on Saturday:
Old School Feeling, "Changes (Remix), Walk Toward the Sky, and Love Don't Live Here.

and the winner is....

Thanks to everyone who participated in my first giveaway! I was all ready to document how I picked the winner, but *someone* decided it would be a good idea to nibble away at my camera cord (it's a good thing Bodhi is adorable!) But congratulations again to Lexiloo, your name was the one picked!
